The Human Rights Initiatives Unit (HRIU) was set up in 2020 and is responsible for the Anti-Human Trafficking reform.
The HRIU oversees the implementation of the National Strategy and Action Plan on Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings in Malta (2024-2030) which has been developed through a Joint EU DG Reform and Council of Europe project. The Unit currently fulfils the national coordination and reporting functions in the field of human trafficking through the Anti-Human Trafficking Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), as well as the collaboration with social partners, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders.
HRIU also leads national awareness raising campaigns on human trafficking with the aim of informing the public on the red flags of modern slavery and encouraging the reporting of any suspicious activity. Awareness raising efforts are also aimed towards victims and those at risk of human trafficking in order to encourage self-identification and to promote support services.
